Sam Smith and John Legend were the musical stars – we know the true stars were the kids there was money being raised for - at the 2015 Red Nose Day television benefit held last night (March 13) at the London Palladium. The British and the American singers performed together their recently-unveiled duet version of the song “Lay Me Down”, whose original solo edit can be found on Sam's critically-acclaimed debut album "In the Lonely Hour". Comic Relief (the charity who runs Red Nose Day) asked Sam earlier this year if he would agree to be the artist in charge of doing the 2015 Red Nose Day official single, and evidently he happily said “yes!”. Apparently, it was huge honour for him. Well, the thing that you MIGHT criticize here is that he chose to use one of his own songs (and actually his current international single) to be the Red Nose Day single (just making it a duet with John legend so it wouldn’t look too lazy on his end and so people wouldn’t accuse him of blatantly do it to promote his new single) instead of recording an original. It perhaps should’ve been the right thing to do.
Performance review: Absolutely breath-taking! See, for a performance like this I could forgive Sam for using the Red Nose Day single to promote his own music. He sounded heavenly, and his vocals blended really well with John's. Meanwhile Mr. Legend did his thing on the piano, and added an extra dose of soul and R&B with his second verse. The standing ovation at the end was certainly much deserved.
Make sure to buy “Lay Me Down” (ft. John Legend)” on iTunes because you now know a great deal of the proceeds will go to a good cause (improve the life of underprivileged kids living in Africa and other areas in the world).
