The return of Carly Rae Jepsen is just around the corner.
The Canadian singer will release her already-announced new single “I Really Like You” inMarch, Carly’s manager Scooter Braun told Billboard.biz in an interview this week.
“I told her that she couldn't come out with anything unless it was on the level of "Call Me Maybe." And, now we have a new one that is on that level”, added the 33-year-old New Yorker who also handles the career of Justin Bieber.
I personally LOVED Carly’s 2012 “Kiss” album. I thought it was packed with great pop songs and that there were no fillers.
I believed that after “Call Me Maybe”, and the incredible quality of her album she would be catapulted to the VIP area of the music industry but unfortunately it was the other way around. Carly Rae Jepsen and Interscope failed to find a successful follow-up to “Call Me Maybe” and the US sales of the album “Kiss” were disappointing too (it debuted at #6 selling 46k copies only). I find the incapability to find a successful follow-up single the most tragic of these situations, though. As I said, “Kiss” was filled with amazing songs. Interscope released “This Kiss” and “Tonight I’m Getting Over You” (including a remix with Nicki Minaj) as second and third singles but it all failed. The US audience turned their back on Carly. They liked her with “Call Me Maybe” but they were unwilling to keep supporting her other music.
Carly was then labeled as a “one hit wonder”. Hard to admit but if we take a look at the definition of this adjective, it is true. Carly Rae Jepse is an unfair one hit wonder.
Now Scooter Braun says they’ve found THE SONG to make Carly Rae Jepsen return to the top of the charts. Will it be true? I certainly hope so! If Carly fails with this single it’ll be game over for her, though. It needs to be a perfect pure pop song.
